Living

The beautiful open-plan living area of Elmwood rests on the first floor, overlooking gorgeous countryside scenes framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and warmed by underfloor heating throughout. Bathed in calming, neutral hues and crowned with full-height vaulted ceilings with exposed oak beams, it is a stunning, light-filled space perfect for socialising and unwinding. For utmost comfort, the lounge presents a bespoke sectional sofa, designed around a coffee table and warming wood burning stove. Ready for catching up on your favourite shows and enjoying movie nights fireside, there is a Samsung Smart TV.

Eating and dining

Adjoining the lounge is a spacious kitchen and dining area illuminated by streams of natural light from a plethora of windows and a striking pendant lamp overhead. The perfect space for curating delicious feasts, the kitchen features Cararra Quartz worktops, off-white cabinets, complemented by a range of accoutrements and appliances. Open wood shelves and sleek black cabinet handles seamlessly combine traditional and contemporary aesthetics, while above the counter, large windows create a natural portrait of tangled trees and open skies to bring the outside in throughout the year. For divine mealtimes in your Boutique abode, a large, reclaimed wood table with six chairs provides a dreamy space to dine together.

Sleeping and bathing

There are two sumptuous bedrooms at Elmwood, complete with ensuite bathrooms for total comfort and privacy.

The first of the ground floor bedrooms enjoys stunning garden views through large patio doors, fitted with curtains for when the sun dips beyond the horizon. With a super-king bed that can be transformed into a twin if necessary, it beckons with the finest linens and cosiest cushions for the most serene repose. Reflecting the greenery of the garden, the bedroom features organic tones and forest-hued wood panelling, while tasteful decorations dress the room. Attached to the bedroom, an ensuite bathroom awaits with a walk-in shower and a deep bath for restful soaks.

Elmwood's second garden-view bedroom is centred around an irresistibly cosy super-king bed that can also be turned into a twin if required. Tranquil tones adorn the walls, complemented by slate-coloured wainscoting and textured throws. Exposed wood side tables hug the bed, topped with lamps for drawn-out lie-ins and early evenings in bed with your favourite page-turner. Completing the picture is an ensuite bathroom with marble tiling, residing with a spacious walk-in shower.

You'll also find a built-in wardrobe in both bedrooms for storing belongings.

Outdoor space

Outside, you'll discover a picturesque, enclosed garden, beyond which seven acres of fields roll away to a verdant horizon. Head out onto the terrace to enjoy the views and tranquil surroundings, listening to the soundtrack of birdsong as you gather around the outdoor dining table. With a dining table for six and an outdoor armchair topped with plump cushions, you can settle in style as corks are popped and conversations flow. For total relaxation, the star of the show can be found in the Aspen Tao hot tub; a stunning location under open skies, where soothing soaks will be hard to resist. Beyond the garden, private farmland, dappled woodland and countryside filled with pastoral charms call for rejuvenating strolls in the fresh country air. Carefully curated with sunset lovers in mind, the retreat design ensures mesmeric moments overlooking the Exmoor Hills during the summer season.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Elmwood:

This retreat blew me away; I never knew a property could be an exact replica of how it is presented in the brochure, yet at the same time exceed all expectations. Jo is a wonderfully considerate owner who clearly has a passion to strive to create the best possible experience for her guests. The house was eveything we could have hoped for and more - and definitely justified the 6 hour journey. Just lovely.

Quiet, relaxing, peaceful, perfect

Absolutely fantastic ?????????? getaway! The barn is stunning, amazing views, immaculately kept and beautifully thought out, everything you could possibly need. Located on a quiet country lane, easy to find and plenty of private parking. Hot tub was a perfect end to the day under the stars. Host Joanna was really helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Stayed as a couple but would work just as well for 2 couples as lots of space for everyone. My only regret is not booking for longer! Thanks so much

A really gorgeous retreat with the most stunning countryside views! Everything about the property was perfect, it's been done to a really high standard and we loved the log burner too. The welcome basket with local produce was a lovely touch, and Jo the owner was very communicative and ensured we had a comfortable stay. I'd highly recommend and we'd definitely come back to this part of East Devon again!

Elmwood is simply stunning, lovely remote location, perfect place for a relaxing break. Fantastic local places to visit. Joanna was an amazing host too which rounds off the whole experience.

5* Luxury in the Devonshire countryside ! We booked this retreat mainly because the interiors looked so inviting and beautiful….Elmwood did not disappoint …everything was provided including a lovely welcome hamper . The barn has been creatively designed and is the perfect place for a quiet break …the views were just lovely … and the owners very helpful …they have created a real haven …highly recommend! Susan & Nick

Elmwood is an absolutely stunning retreat! Inviting, calm & super quiet, extremely comfortable…the best appointed holiday rental we’ve stayed in. Joanna & Nick were superb hosts, close enough if required, yet always discreet. A wonderful place to admire the stunning scenery & recharge the batteries.

A beautiful, secluded stay in the heart of Devonshire countryside. Immaculately kept with everything that you could possibly need. A view to die for!! The only difficulty was leaving…we didn’t want to!!

Elmwood is stunning. Incredibly chic and comfortable stay.

Gorgeous house with stunning views. The kitchen was well stocked and we really enjoyed the hot tub. The perfect place to relax and switch off.

Absolutely amazing stay, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, with a lovely view, we spent hours watching the nature outside, everything you need for a perfect stay, hosts Joanna and Nick where so helpful and the local area so beautiful, if you get the chance, eat at the recommended list of restaurants in the check in guide, all where fabulous.Don't think about booking, just book while there is availability at Elmwood,as this place will not disappoint, its truly heavenly.

Beautiful stay at Elmwood. We had the best weekend and didn’t want to leave. Coming away with two small children and a dog can be pretty stressful, but once we quickly settled into Elmwood with the help of Joanne and Nick, we felt so relaxed and at home. The house was immaculate, the interiors were beautiful and everything was so well thought through. Our dog loved it here, having an enclosed garden was amazing and even better when we realised the dog shower was heated. It was like a dog spa after some muddy walks or trips to the beach. Our little ones loved staying here and watching out the window at the animals or planes in the distance. The local area was lovely and so welcoming and friendly. We loved the local village shop/cafe with the culm pub just down the road with a little park for children and a nice walk along the river. A local florist had beautiful bouquets and so friendly, even the local farmer was very welcoming and let us say hello to his cows and tractors with our three year old. We had two trips to the beach and lots of national trust locations close too. The hot tub was a big hit with all of us, which was warm when we arrived and was very clean with robes, towels and plastic glasses to make it so practical. The house had everything we needed and everything was to such a high standard. Cooking in the kitchen was so enjoyable and had everything we needed for a full English in the morning to a Sunday lunch. Our hosts were lovely and welcoming. They responded quickly if we had any questions and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend Elmwood to anyone and I’m sure we will be back soon. Thank you for having us x

What a lovely stay at Elmwood. We stayed for 4 nights and had two dogs. The barn is so well appointed and felt very luxurious. Two lovely bedrooms with en-suites and great to also to have a bath option too. The view from the large windows are superb and given it was a chilly November week we used the wood burner which was very cosy. Kitchen very well appointed and everything very comfortable. Joanna was there on arrival to give us advice on where to have lovely local dog walks which was really helpful. Am hoping to return again soon!

Lovely house, well equipped and wonderfully clean in a great location for exploring east Devon/west Dorset. Excellent quality Welcome Pack on arrival including very good bottle of red wine! Greeted in person by Jo. We'd highly recommend this property.

Elmwood was as beautiful as the pictures! Upon arrival everything was beautifully presented, very fresh and clean and the first reaction seeing the amazing views was an overall ‘wow!’. As ever the welcome hamper is always a nice treat, with lovely treats and local produce. Elmwood had everything we needed, from fluffy towels and dressing gowns to doggy treats for the pooch, everything was thought of. Our lovely host was on hand for lots of helpful local information and extra dishwasher tablets when needed! We really felt it was a fabulous retreat from the world, settling in amongst the trees and the wildlife, wild and beautiful walks on your doorstop (wellies needed in the autumn!), and the hot tub was an extra treat during the twilight hours to ease the aches and pains, with a glass of fizz of course! This retreat was just that for us, a much needed retreat from the stresses of everyday life, tucked away, private and quiet, cosy and reconnecting with ourselves and nature. Highly recommended if you truly want to get away from it all.

The host was very warm and friendly, property was recently renovated so everything is immaculate. Good location for both coasts and a lovely quiet location to relax and recharge the batteries - the hot tub was great and used every evening. Great find!

We loved, loved, loved our stay at Elmwood! The most wonderful views and such a beautiful place to stay. We loved the interiors and attention to detail. Joanna has made Elmwood a very special home from home - we will definitely be returning!

The location and facilities are both superb and incredibly relaxing vibe and the views are stunning

Perfection, exceeded our expectations.

We had an amazing stay at Elmwood, it's such a beautiful property in a wonderfully peaceful environment. The interior decor and fixtures & fittings are all very luxurious and there is plenty of space to relax and unwind, including the hot tub! The enclosed area at the front of the property was great for our dog to be able to get some fresh air and we were made to feel very welcome by the hosts. We also enjoyed the walking routes provided and the local pub recommendations. Would love to visit again in future.

We can't say enough how much we enjoyed our stay at Elmwood. It is an amazing house and absolutely fabulous for us as a family of five. The living area on the second floor was perfect for meals as a family and the kitchen had everything we needed when we decided to whip up a homecooked dinner one evening. The view from the second floor is breathtaking and we enjoyed both sunsets that we managed to catch during our stay! Our children loved watching the sheep coming into the field and grazing in the day. The hot tub was lush. We had some of our best nights' sleep in the beds at Elmwood and would have loved to stay a few nights more. Thank you Jo and Nick for being so hospitable and for sharing your wonderful cottage with us! We can't wait to come back!

We absolutely loved our little getaway. This place is a hidden gem in green lush of Devon countryside. My favourite was the view, huge windows give you an overwhelming sense of peace no matter what the weather. Thank you to the owners for every detail that they have put into the property to make sure guests feel welcome, comfortable and private. Make sure to take your wellies and a rain jacket as the weather can be temperamental, however you will always have the fire to come back to. The perfect rural getaway.

Just returned from a wonderful two week stay at Elmwood. The cottage is immaculate, thoughtfully laid out to make the most of the views, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. We spent a huge amount of time outside enjoying the views and the hot tub, and in the evening (when the sky was clear!) spotting shooting stars. The sunsets were absolutely amazing! We walked for miles directly from the front door, through Hemyock and Culmstock and up to the Beacon for the spectacular view. Should also mention our hosts Jo and Nick were so friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. We're now just trying to figure out when we can go back.
